When the Classic Monte-Carlo Challenge was first conceived twenty one years ago, it was difficult to realise that an event was being created that would leave a lasting impression on those fortunate to be part of it.  Designed to be more than just another event for old cars, the Challenge rightly paid homage to the most famous rally in the world, and the founding fathers of the Automobile Club de Monaco who started it all of in 1911.

The original Challenge was very special.  It recalled with care the atmosphere of the most authentic winter epic, the challenge of driving the worst roads in Europe in the thick of mid-winter and the satisfaction of surviving and finally descending from the Alpine snow and fog to the brilliant sunshine of the Mediterranean, and the most famous finishing ramp in rallying history.

Unlike many events, all mod cons are banned.  But adventure and camaraderie there is an abundance – the Monte-Carlo Challenge !
This is what brings me to a specific tribute to our dearest friend, Robert Harley, who left us prematurely after losing his battle against brain cancer.  Robert was generous to a fault, gregarious and popular, with a hugely infectious zest for life. He was well known as a sparkling raconteur and wit.

A passionate motorsport competitor, Robert developed a passion for motor cars.  He bought his first pre-war car, a 4½-Litre Bentley, in 1998, which seeded his enormous admiration for W O Bentley.  Over the years his collection of cars included various WOs. Lagondas, an Aston Martin DB2/4 as well as Jaguars, a Ford Model A, a Bristol, a Triumph TR3A and more modern Bentleys.

In 1999, Robert entered The Classic Marathon and the historic rallying bug took hold, culminating in him winning ‘Le Jog’ in his TR3A in 2006.  In 2001 hw rook up historic racing, the highlight of which was driving in the Motor Racing Legends pre-war event before the start of the Le Mans 24-Hour Race in 2006.  He and his friend drove their 4½-L Bentleys from home to the circuit and back in the manner of the original ‘Bentley Boys’.

In 2007 at Donington Park, Robert failed to see the chequered flag; five days later he was diagnosed with a malignant brain tumour.  Within four weeks of having surgery, he was back in action and completed the London to Brighton Veteran Car Run in his 1903 Cadillac, bought at Bonham’s auction two days before the event!!

Robert may not be with us today, but still manages to keep us laughing when we talk about his antics.  He was bigger than life itself!  It is fair to say that all those whose life he touched are richer for having had the privilege of being considered as one of his ‘chums’!
